Solid Rock

For our wedding anniversary in October, we usually take a week off to go somewhere and relax. This year we stayed in the neighboring state of Missouri. One place we visited was Elephant Rock State Park. We had heard about the walking trails and large rocks, but I was astounded by the formations, number, and size of the enormous boulders. It did not disappoint.

Walking the trail among the rocks, I marveled at the complexity and quiet beauty of our Fathers’ world. I am amazed that anyone could deny the existence of the Creator.

It was a beautiful fall day. The leaves were stunning, the walk invigorating, and I was in good company. How grateful I am that God has blessed me with Peter, my husband and best friend for 48 years.

Standing on the rocks, these words, written by Edward Mote in 1834, ran through my mind: “On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.” The lyrics were put to music by William B. Bradley in 1863 and appeared in hymnbooks as The Solid Rock.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

With our feet planted on the Rock, we have no need for anxiety or fear! No matter what happens we have a firm foundation. We can trust Him, rest in His promises, and experience His peace.

Standing on the ROCK,

Ruth
